Two major educational projects under the construction of the Ghana Education Trust Fund, (GETFund) have been abandoned at Kona in the Sekeyere South district of the Ashanti Region.

The various GETFund projects in the community include 6-unit classroom blocks that were started in 2007 under the former president Agyekum Kufuor’s administration which was nearing completion, had been left to rot for about 13 years now.

Another 6-unit classroom block GETFund project in the same community according to authorities which was started in 2016 under the former President John Mahama’s regime have also been abandoned by the contractor.

The intervention according to the immediate past Local Council Chairman Mr. Isaac Oheneba Akwabka was expected to help resolve challenges confronting the Kona community including solving the infrastructural deficit in the educational sector in the area.

Mr. Isaac in an interview with Ghgossip said although the local council committee has followed up to the GETFund office at the national level for the completion of the projects, there are no signs that construction works would re-start anytime soon, describing the situation as worrying.

The Assemblymember of the area, Hon Samuel Adu Amoako said over 300 students have been displaced as a result of the failure on the part of the government to complete the projects.

He explained that the completion of the GETFund projects would bring huge relief to the school as there’s enormous pressure on the few facilities that was built years ago in the community.

Hon emphasized that the community needed the abandoned projects badly as over 300 students are been parked in an uncompleted building in the community.
