Two Indonesian women have been publicly shamed and whipped nearly 100 times each for selling sex workers’ services online, as revealed by an official in the country’s conservative Aceh province.

Ind onesia is an Islam-majority controlled nation where Islamic sharia law is imposed on the citizens which allows for the punishment of a range of offense like gambling, fornication and stealing.

Human right groups have called an end to the public shame and humiliation victims of the sharia law go through and have called an end to the harsh laws.

Aji Asmanuddin, head of Langsa’s Islamic sharia agency disclosed that the two hijab-wearing suspects were arrested in March along with five sex workers, who could also face a flogging if found guilty of violating Islamic law.

He said: “They were punished for violating sharia by advertising (sex) through the internet, This is the first (pimping) case in Langsa although we believe there are many of them out there. We just don’t have the necessary tools to monitor them online.”
