The rap game has evolved over the last few years and to the die-hard fans of hardcore rap like myself, we hit the panic button when Afrobeat and Afropop nearly relegated the genre to the background.

Admittedly, Afrobeat is still at the pinnacle, and along with the dynamism which has seized music industry, artists who specialize in singing get the cutting edge in the commercial market and become famous than their counterparts who strictly do rap music.

It’s for this reason what we are happy some few rappers in Ghana are still holding the fort although they occasionally incorporate Afrobeat into their crafts. So let’s get started on rappers who will make a name for themselves in 2021. The list follows no particular order.

1. Medikal

We have to give Medikal a huge credit for transforming the rap game and making it attractive despite the influx of Afrobeat which he himself delves into intermittently to sustain his relevancy. The young man who recently got married to former YOLO actress Fela Makafui and became a father for the first time a few months later has been one of the biggest poster boys of rap music consistently in three years now.

This year wouldn’t be different and if his ‘Las Hustle’ is anything to go by, then we should expect more fireworks from El Chairmano.

2. Strongman

It’s true Vincent Kwaku Osei, professionally known as Strongman has not found his footing in the watery soil of rap music in Ghana yet relative to his huge talent but his year could be his moment. Since he severed ties with Sarkodie’s SarkCess Music record label, we are yet to feel his acumen but definitely, 2021 will be his year to etch his name into the rap hall of fame and grab some awards too.

3. Sarkodie

I did not want to put Sarkodie’s name here because this article somewhat doesn’t define him (that’s to say he’s in a league of his own). Here’s a man who has been consistent for over a decade which is rare in Ghana along with winning countless number of awards- ultimately making him the most decorated rapper in Africa.

He has more hit songs than any rapper in Ghana and it seems there’s no limit to his greatness. Well, he could augment his huge reputation with another banger in 2021 so of course, he needs to be mentioned here.

4. Kofi Mole

Kofi Mole is unarguably the only person on Sarkodie’s Biiba Project who is making waves and doing well on the music scene. It won’t be surprising if he burst out once again in 2021 to consolidate his status in the mainstream.

5. Kwaku Flick

This young rapper who has the same flow as Kwesi Arthur is going to blossom this year and I say this authoritatively. His ‘Money’ song has become a street anthem and it’s possible it will an award at the forthcoming Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMAs)

Such is his soaring popularity that even ace broadcaster Abeiku Santana said the song is the biggest in Ghana right now and Shatta Wale will even be disappointed if ‘Money’ overlooked at the prestigious Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMAs).

Mr. Santana said; ‘Kweku Flick, you are the new King in Ghana, Abeiku Santana says so. And I am telling you that all the songs you will churn out in the three to five years will be killer, wicked and dope’ he said on his ‘Ekwanso Dwoodwoo’ programme.
