As many as 91 staff of the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital have tested positive for coronavirus, thereby forcing management to suspend non-emergency surgery and urgent cases.

The suspension is expected to last at least for the next two weeks with the hospital only attending to “only dire emergencies.” during the period.

Majority of the staff who tested positive, are however, self-isolating, as said by the Deputy Director of Medical Affairs in a memo.

“There has been a recent surge of COVID-19 infections among staff working in the Surgical areas. This has necessitated self-isolation of majority of these staff. Hence a decision has been taken to suspend all urgent cases for two (2) weeks. All emergency cases will continue as before,” a memo by the hospital read.

Also in a statement, the Head of Public Affairs at the facility, Mustapha Salifu, said the suspension will afford Ghana’s premier hospital the chance to reorganize itself “for the resumption of regular services.”

“We, therefore, request sister health facilities to refer only dire surgical emergencies (Surgery, ENT, Maxillofacial and Obstetrics) to Korle Bu during the suspension period. Other parts of the Hospital are still in full operation,” he noted in his statement.
