Anwar Ibrahim biography

Anwar Ibrahim attended the Malay College Kuala Kangsar for his secondary education. He received his education at the University of Malaya, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Malay Studies. From 1974 to 1975, he spent time in jail working on his master’s degree in literature through the National University of Malaysia.

Anwar served as the National Union of Malaysian Muslim Students’ president from 1968 to 1971 while still a student. He also served as the University of Malaya Malay Language Society’s president at the same time.

He co-founded Angkatan Belia Islam Malaysia (ABIM), and in 1971 he served on the pro tem committee. He was also chosen to serve as the second President of Majlis Belia Malaysia, the national youth council.

Anwar was detained in 1974 during student demonstrations against hunger and poverty in rural areas. This occurred as a false report that claimed a family had perished from starvation in a village in Baling, Kedah, was made public.

However, as the price of rubber declined in 1974, the rubber tappers in Baling were forced to live in extreme poverty.

He was held in the Kamunting Detention Center for 20 months under the Internal Security Act (ISA), which permits detention without a hearing. He represented Asia Pacific at the World Assembly of Muslim Youth from 1975 to 1982.

Anwar Ibrahim also co-founded the International Institute of Islamic Thought (IIIT) in the United States of America.

Anwar has served as one of four acting directors, a member of the IIIT board of directors, and a trustee. Between 1983 and 1988, he served as chancellor of International Islamic University Kuala Lumpur.

Anwar, the founder and second president of an Islamic youth organization called Angkatan Belia Islam Malaysia (ABIM), joined the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO) in 1982, led by Mahathir Mohamad, who had become prime minister in 1981.

Anwar rose quickly through the ranks; his first ministerial position was that of Minister of Culture, Youth, and Sports in 1983; he then headed the Agriculture Ministry in 1984 before becoming Minister of Education in 1986.

Anwar implemented numerous policies in the national school curriculum during his tenure as Education Minister.

One of his most significant reforms was renaming the national language from Bahasa Malaysia to Bahasa Melayu. Non-Malays criticized the move, claiming that it would alienate the younger generation from the national language because they would associate it with Malays rather than Malaysians.

Anwar was elected as the 25th President of UNESCO’s General Conference while serving as Minister of Education. Anwar Ibrahim was appointed as the second President of the International Islamic University of Malaysia in 1988.
