The Coordinator for the National Disaster Management Organization(NADMO) Prestea Huni-Valley, Mr. Francis Abeiku Yankah has intimated that the Appiate community where the massive explosion claimed the lives of dozens is no longer inhabitable for humans.

Speaking in an interview with TV3, Mr. Francis Yankah stated that due to the explosion that occurred in the community, Appiate is now a “dead community” since it cannot inhabit the residents anymore.

According to him, he heard the explosion from afar and had a distress call from a journalist informing him about the terrible occurrence. He said that he was thrown into a state of shock after sighting the devastation caused by the massive explosion, hence the town is no longer be occupied by the residents anymore.

‘I was driving back from Prestea when I heard an explosion in the distance. I began moving towards the scene after receiving a phone call from a journalist informing me of what had occurred,”

he said.

“When I arrived in the area, I was shocked to see the complete devastation of the community known as Apiati; the community is currently dead and cannot be inhabited by anyone,” he added.

Ten deceased bodies were discovered on the ground as a result of the explosion. The MCE stated he was also told of the news and that excavators were deployed to the spot to rescue trapped bodies after a number of buildings fell in a statement to TV3’s George Kwening on Thursday, January 20.

According to police, the explosion was triggered by a collision between a mining explosive vehicle moving from Tarkwa to Chirano mines and a motorcycle.
