She developed a passion for music at a younger age and was consistent throughout her career rising through the ranks to become one of the most sought-after singers.

Astrud Gilberto became a household name in the 1960s following her recording of the song “The Girl from Ipanema”.

Her version of ‘The Girl From Ipanema’ went on to be a global hit, selling more than five million copies worldwide and boosting the profile of bossa nova music internationally.

Astrud had not previously been rated as a key figure in the bossa nova movement, as she had never sung professionally before but that one hit record changed everything.

The song was taken from the album Getz/Gilberto, a collaboration set featuring the American saxophonist Stan Getz and the Brazilian guitarist João Gilberto.

Astrud sang the English words on the 1963 album Getz/Gilberto as her first professional gig, going on to record 16 studio albums over the course of her career.
