He had more success in the 1988 Republican primary but lost to Vice President George H.W. Bush. Bob Dole won the 1996 Republican presidential nomination and chose Jack Kemp as his vice presidential nominee. The Republican candidate lost to Clinton in the general election, making Dole the first major party candidate to lose for president and vice president. He resigned from the Senate during the 1996 campaign and did not seek public office after the election.

Dole remained active after leaving public office. He has appeared in numerous commercials and TV shows and has served on various councils. In 2012, Bob Dole unsuccessfully lobbied for Senate ratification of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. He initially endorsed Jeb Bush in the 2016 Republican primary, but later became the only former Republican presidential candidate to endorse Donald Trump in the general election.

Bob Dole was an advisor to the Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation. He was a member of the committee and a special counsel in the Washington, D.C. office of the law firm Alston & Byrd.
