On Saturday, African’s southernmost country, South Africa exceeded the 500,000 confirmed cases of the coronavirus representing over 50% of all confirmed cases reported in all countries in Africa.
Minister of Health in South Africa, Zwelini Mkhize declared that the country recorded 10,107 new cases of the COVID-19 on Saturday. This brings the total number of confirmed cases to 503,290, whiles 8,153 patients have died.

According to Johns Hopkins University, South Africa ranks fifth in the highest number of cases in the world.
A Durban based virologist, Denis Chopera said,
“Half a million is a significant milestone because it shows we’ve entered a stage of rapid increases. We may reach 1 million cases very quickly,”

“What we know for sure is that the figures are an underestimate and that this virus will be with us for a long time to come.”
