South African Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma on Monday 13th June, 2020 reminded its citizens that the country is still under lockdown, saying “we are still in lockdown”, as the country reaches 276,242 Covid-19 infections, and 4,079 deaths.

The daily infection rate has climbed to well above 12,000 infections in a 24-hour cycle.

Her comment comes after President Cyril Ramaphosa announced on Sunday night that, while the country remains at Alert Level 3, certain restrictions would be tightened once again, including the banning of liquor and the reintroduction of a daily curfew.

The president further stated that currently, 500 South Africans are infected with Covid-19 every hour.

“This disease knows no class, no gender, no race no social status – no one is safe until we are all safe. We are at war with an invisible enemy – we are the ones that move it around,” Dlamini-Zuma said.

The minister reaffirmed that there will be a penalty for failure to comply with regulations regarding the wearing of nosemasks in the country.

“The virus doesn’t move – the virus is moved by people. It is spread by people,” she said.

‘’Access to beaches remains prohibited, Dlamini-Zuma said, citing large gatherings on beaches, which is likely to spread the virus more rapidly.

“When you get to family, the instinct is to come to near them, the instinct is to hug them.” The minister also said that there was an inter-generational component – where the virus can inadvertently be taken home, and older people with co-morbidities may be exposed to Covid-19.

“People over 60 must remain at home… they are more at risk of getting the virus, and the mortality rate is higher with age. It is for that reason that we are still not allowing (family) visits.”

“I want to stress that this is really a fight against Covid-19. We are number 25 in terms of population size [but] we are number 10 at the number of infections. We have to do everything to protect this beautiful nation of ours,” she added.
