The Vice President of Ghana, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia at a recent forum justified the over 8% increase in electricity and water tariffs on October 1, 2019.

Dr. Bawumia stated that the NDC while in power, they cumulatively increased electricity tariff by a whopping 166%.

“Between 2013 and 2016, just the last four years of the NDC government, the cumulative increase in electricity tariff was 166%,” Dr. Bawumia said during a recent submission.

He justified the recent increase in utility tariffs explaining that the Akufo-Addo led government on the other hand cut utility tariffs to support and encourage more employment.

“In 2018, we [NPP] reduced electricity prices of businesses by 30% and for households by 17.5 %, an average of around 22%,” he noted. Dr. Bawumia further argued that the NPP IN July 2018 increased electricity tariff by 11% plus the October 1, 5.6% increment. “When you take the total cumulative increase on average, as I said, between 2017 and today, you have a cumulative decrease of about 5%,” he added.

Comparing the NPP to the NDC under John Mahama, he concluded that the John Mahama led administration increased electricity tariff by 116% and the NPP has come down by 5% on the average since assuming power in 2017. He, therefore, stated that comparatively the NPP’s perforce outweighs the NDC.
