A community Health nurse from Maamobi General Hospital Theodora Abeka Acquah has encouraged the excessive in take of protein foods and fruits during menstrual flow.

Speaking in an interview on Adom TV, hosted by Afia Amankwah Tamakloe, Madam Theodora Abeka stated that when women develop the habit of eating proteins like meat, fish, eggs etc and fruits like banana, it will help to control their mood. She explained that during ovulation and menstruation, most people develop mood swings. Hence, encouraging all women to eat more proteins and fruits.

Sharing her experienced on the show, Nana Ama Adutwumwaa the President of Touching the Lives of Girls Foundation International explained how she felt shy of informing anyone especially her mother when she had her period for the first time at age 12. She stated that she was using unhygienic materials whenever she was menstruating continuously for 6 months until she stained herself in a neighbors house.

According to Nana Ama, most mothers fail to educate their girl child on how to carry themselves whenever they get to the time of the month. She explained that because of some of the issues she experienced during her early age, motivated her to form her foundation to educate the girl child especially girls from the rural areas on hygienic ways of keeping themselves during the time of the month.

Madam Theodora Abeka however also advised that women should always check expiry dates of sanitary pads when they purchase because the use of expired pads can cause health problems to women.
