The recently initiated Panel of Inquiry and Restitution that was set up by the Lagos state government begun their hearing with 4 cases.

Their duty is to investigate allegations of human right abuses that have been leveled against the disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad operatives.

The panel began their first case involving Mr. Okoliagu Abunike, a father of five who explained the humiliations he went through in the hands of SARS operatives.

Narrating to the Justice Doris Okuwobi of the panel, he said his company called for his arrest for funds embezzlement in 2012.

The policemen of Ojo police station arrested him, beat and humiliated him by tearing off his clothes, and also paraded him around the Alaba Market.

After they were satisfied with the humiliations, they handed him over to the SARS operatives who also continued the humiliations for 47 days.

Mr. Okoliagu continued that SARS officers such as Inspector Sunday, alias Baba Ijapa; and ASP Haruna, continued the humiliation and torturing until he lost 2 of his tooth.

In further of his naration he said

My family didn’t know where I was. When they eventually knew and my mother and wife came to SARS office in Ikeja, they beat up my mother and wife in my presence.

“While I was in detention, they took over my house, they sold all my properties, including my Acura jeep, 17KVA generator, my inverter, my three blackberry phones and my land.”

He also told the panel how Justice Ibrahim Buba of the Federal High Court in Lagos rewarded N10m in the case between Mr Abunike vs Police officer and the former boss.

Exhibit of Judgement of N10m was submitted and accepted by the Panel of Inquiry and Restitution with decison based on the case adjourned to November 3rd 2020
