Abubakar Malami, Minister of Justice and Attorney-General of the Federation, says the Federal Government has over £200 million in the United States to retrieve.
The above statement was made by Malami while he was in New York for the 76th General Assembly of the United Nations. The Nigerian government, he claims, is launching a big effort to retrieve assets that belong to the country.
“We are looking at the possibility of recovering further 200m pounds among others but then, that does not mean they are not other associated assets being pursued, in terms of other countries of the world inclusive of Ireland.
The government is trying to gather international momentum associated with the processes and procedures, in terms of making things easier for countries to recover assets with ease” he said
The AGF declined to divulge any further information about the strategy however posited that “government is trying to gather international momentum associated with the processes and procedures, in terms of making things easier for countries to recover assets with ease”.
In other news, Governor David Umahi has warned that the South-East area of the country is being designated as a “red zone” by ministries because of instability.
Announcing that federal projects will not be coming to Ebonyi state’s Abakiliki on Tuesday, Governor Ebonyi declared this while inaugurating the council’s leadership.
Umahi remarked that the movement for secession has been hijacked by cultists, kidnappers, and other criminal elements, and that it is time for the zone’s leaders and people to jointly say no to the deaths in the region. He believes that the agitation has to be reevaluated.

He said;
“The declaration of south-east as a red zone by these ministries means that what is due to us would be difficult to come.
“It is time for the zone’s leaders and people to collectively say no to the killings in the zone because we no longer see the real agenda of the agitations.
“The people should support governors from the zone and other leaders to permanently stop this bloodshed because we know the parents and communities of the perpetrators of the heinous acts.
“It is presently difficult for trucks with goods from other parts of the country to come to the zone as we did not harmonise adequately to determine areas of comparative advantage.”
