Dengue fever is a very rare but deadly disease that can kill any human if not treated early. If treatment is delayed People with weakened immune systems as well as those with a second or subsequent dengue infection are believed to be at greater risk for developing dengue hemorrhagic fever.

About 350 million dengue infections occur worldwide each year with about 94 million resulting in sickness. It is transmitted by the bite of an Aedes mosquito infected with a dengue virus. Just like malaria, the mosquito picks the virus from an infected person through a bite and transmits it through a bite. So without the mosquito as vector, the disease cannot be spread out.

Symptoms of dengue fever begin after 4 to 6 days after infection and persist for up to 10 days. Its symptoms include severe and sudden high fever, severe headache, pain behind the eyes, mild bleeding (such as nose bleed), joint and muscle pains, fatigue, nausea and vomiting. It can only be diagnosed only through blood tests.

The virus is mostly dominant in tropical areas, so one will need a blood test after a visit to a tropical area and starts experiencing such symptoms so as to not mistaken it for normal flu and fever.

There is no exact cure o treat dengue fever infection. Its treatment involves the use of pain relievers with acetaminophen and at the same time avoiding medicines that have aspirin as constituent, as this could worsen the bleeding. But like any other disease, it can be prevented when one visits the virus dominant areas. Preventive measures include:

  • using mosquito repellents even when indoors
  • sleeping under treated mosquito nets even when indoors
  • when outside, long-sleeved shirts should be worn together with long pants tucked into socks
  • doors and windows should be tightly secured without and holes in them

So anytime you find yourself in tropical areas, just observe the necessary preventive measures to stay healthy!!!
