Former Senegal midfielder Papa Bouba Diop has died at the age of 42.

He was confirmed on Sunday after battling with illness for a longtime.

Diop was part of Senegal’s squad for their maiden FIFA World Cup in 2002. He made history by scoring the country’s first goal in the tournament.

His goal helped Senegal cause one of the biggest shocks of the tournament as they beat then world champions, France 1-0.

He played for Fulham, West Ham, Portsmouth among other clubs.
