Although the late Statesman rejected the offer for the University to be named after him when he was alive, President Nana Akufo Addo disclosed that his family has consented to the proposal.

According to the President, Mr. Rawlings provided the seed for the establishment of the University of Development Studies and as such, the institution will be named after him to honor him.

“He respectfully declined the suggestion when I first made it to him in respect of his long-standing principle not to have state monument named after him.

“Whilst he was with us, he, respectfully, declined an offer I made to him, in 2017, to have the University of Development Studies, Tamale, (UDS), which he, personally, helped establish, named after him. His reason was that, in adhering to a long-standing principle, he did not want to have any national monument or facility named after him. Two days after his passing, at the 21st Congregation of UDS, I expressed my strongest convictions, in spite of his reservations, that such an honour should be accorded him

.

“I am glad that this has found favor with his family, and the necessary formalities will be carried out to achieve this, i.e. The Jerry John Rawlings University of Development Studies, Tamale. ” the President stated during the burial rites of the late military leader.

Well, Ghanaians have reacted to the President’s intentions as they question why he would not respect the words of the dead man but rather defy it.

Others also suggested that a new University be built in the name of Rawlings rather than renaming an old one after him.
