Lathitha Nako, a 16-year-old South African school pupil has taken her own life and she left some despairing last words.

Nako committed suicide after being a victim of bullying to her classmates for having a spiritual gift. Her last words were ” I want be done; I feel so empty, I want to die and rest in peace so that I can be free”.

Reports suggest that Bhisho High School Grade 10 pupil was said to have ingested pesticide and died in hospital on Wednesday, November 17 in the Eastern Cape.

She spoke honestly about the bullying she had on social media platforms and how she was considering suicide before she died.

Lathitha described her misery of being humiliated in front of classmates after failing a test and being accused of witchcraft by other students in a voice note to her friend and a message to her cousin obtained by local media.

She then expresses her dissatisfaction with fighting. Her heartbroken family is urging that bullying in schools be addressed in order to avoid future tragedies.

Nathitha aspired to be a physician. Her family had tremendous expectations, but they were destroyed by tragedy.

Mother Kholeka Nako says, “My heart is sore because l will never see Lathitha again l will only see her in pictures. My heart will remain sore Bisho High School has failed. I struggle to sleep.”

Khula Community Development Project’s, Petros Majola says a program needs to be developed to stop bullying in schools.

“Let us sit down and develop a program that deals with bullying at schools. We are aware that they do have their own policies but at the same time we are not sure that they are vocal about these policies.”

The circumstances surrounding her suicide are also being investigated by the Provincial Department of Education.

Vuyiseka Mboxela, a spokesperson for the Eastern Cape Department of Education, said an urgent investigation is ongoing.

“There must be an urgent investigation tomorrow there is a meeting which is going to look holistic into this learner which is then going to give a directive and there is a multidisciplinary committee because there are other people outside the department who interested in this matter.” Mboxela said.

Meanwhile, social workers will also be deployed to the school to provide support to learners and teacher.
