Femi Falana, a human rights lawyer and a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), has warned that if the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is prevented from releasing election results electronically, the country will be in trouble.

In an interview with Channels Television, Falana urged Nigerians to insist that the right thing be done, citing Section 52 of the Electoral Act Amendment Bill, which gives INEC unfettered authority to devise whatever mechanism to ensure that everyone is allowed to vote.

He said;

“By virtue of Section 52 of the Electoral Act amended in 2015, INEC is given unchallenged powers to device any process to guarantee that everybody is able to vote and so INEC is empowered to transmit results electronically.

“When you now put it in the law that INEC shall not transmit election results electronically, we are in trouble. I’m sure that Nigerians are going to continue to demand that proper thing is done in order to ensure that the process we are putting in place will guarantee fair and free election.”

The lead attorney also slammed efforts to ban INEC from disclosing poll results obtained under duress.

Falana encouraged Nigerians to tell their National Assembly representatives not to disrupt the election process.
