The debate on the legalisation of marijuana in Ghana has gained much prominence in recent times with several GH celebs and other prominent people echoing in unison that it’s about time the government legalised the ancient drug.

Well, you wouldn’t expect a presidential hopeful to join the clarion call on the premise that several Ghanaians oppose the legalisation. However, that seems to be the case as the Founder and Leader of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), Kofi Akpaloo has indicated he will legalise marijuana if voted as president of Ghana in the 2020 polls.

Mr Akpaloo made this controversial statement on Asempa FM’s
Ekosii Sen show. Substiating his point with health and economic benefit of the drug, Mr Akpaloo said countries that have taken advantage of the drug are reaping huge benefits.

“I will legalise marijuana in Ghana for commercial purposes if I’m voted as president in election 2020 since the herb has proven to be medically beneficial to society. Marijuana has been legalised in other countries and in Canada for instance, it contributes about $6million to the country’s country,” he noted.

“Let’s think of the commercial benefits of the herbs; it is used to manufacture shoes, clothes, used to cure convulsion and a whole lot of sickness so I think we need to think of its legalisation,” he stated.

To Mr Akpaloo, Ghana needs money and the legalisation of marijuana for commercial purposes can go a long way to help the country.

“When you mention marijuana in Ghana, people think of ‘madness’ but it creates millions of worth for a country’s industry.”
