Africa is blessed with great men and women. One of the men whose name can’t be left out in the history of sports in Africa is Jomo Sono, a.k.a “The Black Prince”.

Ephraim Matsilela Sono affectionately known as Jomo Sono or “Black Prince of South African Soccer” and “Bra J” “Mjomana” was born on 17th July 1955, at Queenstown, Eastern Cape. He is the Head Coach and owner of South African soccer club, Jomo Cosmos Football Club.

Jomo never had a good life growing up, he was abandoned by his mother at the age of eight when his father, a former player of Orlando pirates died in a car crash. He was taken care of by his grandparents who could barely feed themselves. Jomo, took to the street to fend for his ailing grandparents and himself and that was the beginning of his greatness.

His football career took off w hen he was asked to stand in for an absent Orlando Pirates player when he went to watch their match. He thrilled the fans and backroom staff of the team with a blistering performance where he was signed onto the team. His performance earned him the name “Jomo” which means Burning Spear.

In a recent interview shared on social media, Jomo, revealed his biggest highlight of his footballing career which was the moment he had to leave his wife at the wedding grounds to save his team from losing a cup match.
