Since 2013, American politician Katherine Marlea Clark has represented Massachusetts’ Fifth Congressional District in the U.S. Congress.
She is the fourth-highest ranked House Democrat as Assistant House Democratic Leader (formally Assistant Speaker) since 2021.
Many of Boston’s northern and western suburbs, including Medford, Framingham, Woburn, Waltham, and her birthplace of Revere, are included in her district. From 2008 to 2011 and from 2011 to 2013, Clark served in the Massachusetts House of Representatives and Massachusetts Senate, respectively.
Clark, a Connecticut native, practiced law in a number of states before relocating to Massachusetts in 1995, where she worked in state administration. She began serving on the Melrose School Committee in 2002, and in 2005 she was elected committee chair.
She made a contribution to legislation pertaining to municipal pensions, education, and criminal justice after being first elected to the state legislature in 2008. She prevailed in the 2013 special election for the U.S. House of Representatives in the 5th district, replacing Ed Markey, and she currently serves on the House Appropriations Committee.
