Kenya has recently replaced the images of leaders, especially presidents, from newly minted cash coins. The reason behind this bold action is that, they want to prevent glorification.
Previous coins bore the images of Kenya’s three ex-rulers, thus Jomo Kenyatta, Daniel arap Moi and Mwai Kibaki.
Many Kenyans were of the view that, it was a deliberate attempt by their leaders to promote themselves, and to personalise the state.
The new ones have images of the country’s famous wildlife, including lions, elephants, giraffes and rhinos.
Commenting on this new move, current president of Kenya, Uhuru Kenyatta, who is the son of one of the country’s ex leaders, Jomo Kenyatta, stated that, ” the new coins were a big change and showed our nation has come a long way”.
