The number of COVID-19 cases in Gauteng has seen a significant reduction over the past two weeks, according to the Gauteng Command Council.

The committee gave an update on the province’s COVID-19 response on Friday. The total number of active cases is over 122,000. Gauteng Premier David Makhura says over 925 critical-care beds will be added at hospitals. Makhura says there are currently over 5,000 people in hospital with COVID-19.

“We think a number of cases went up during December and early January because of the festive season and increased mobility and inter-provincial travel,” says Mary Kawonga from the Gauteng Command Council.
