Before entering Malaysia’s Parliament in 1964, he was active in the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO).
He served one term before losing his seat and being expelled from UMNO after falling out with Prime Minister Tunku Abdul Rahman.

When Abdul Rahman resigned, Mahathir rejoined UMNO and the parliament, and was promoted to the Cabinet, serving as Minister of Education from 1974 to 1978 and Minister of Trade and Industry from 1978 to 1981.
Malaysia experienced rapid modernization and economic growth during Mahathir’s first term as Prime Minister, and his government initiated widespread industry privatization and a series of daring infrastructure projects.
Mahathir was a dominant political figure, winning five consecutive general elections and defeating a number of challengers to the UMNO leadership. However, his rise to power came at the expense of judicial independence and the traditional powers and privileges of Malaysian royalty.
Following two heart attacks in the previous two years, Mahathir underwent a heart bypass operation in 2007. He had undergone the same procedure following a heart attack in 1989.
He got a chest infection after the surgery in 2007. In 2010, he was admitted to the hospital for treatment of another chest infection.
Mahathir was admitted to the Institut Jantung Negara (IJN) in December 2021 for a medical check-up and observation. He was released after a few days.
Mahathir underwent an unspecified elective medical procedure at the Malaysian National Heart Institute (IJN) in January 2022 and was discharged six days later. Later that month, he was readmitted and placed in the coronary care unit.
He was discharged for continued rehabilitation and treatment after spending more time recovering in hospital after being moved from intensive care to a regular ward.
Mahathir tested positive for COVID-19 in August 2022. He was admitted to the National Heart Institute for several days of observation. After receiving treatment, he was released.

Mukhriz Mahathir – Mukhriz Mahathir is a Malaysian politician who served as Kedah’s 11th and 13th Menteri Besar from May 2013 to February 2016, and again from May 2018 to May 2020.
From March 2008 to May 2013, he was the Deputy Minister of International Trade and Industry in the Barisan Nasional (BN) administration of former Prime Ministers Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and Najib Razak, as well as former Minister Mustapa Mohamed.
He was a Member of Parliament (MP) for Jerlun from March 2008 to May 2018, and a Member of the Kedah State Legislative Assembly (MLA) for Jitra and Ayer Hitam from May 2013 to May 2018.
Mokhzani Mahathir – Mokhzani Mahathir is a Malaysian businessman who is ranked as the 14th richest person in the country. Before establishing oil-equipment manufacturer Kencana Petroleum, he worked as a petroleum engineer. SapuraKencana Petroleum was formed by the merger of Kencana Petroleum and SapuraCrest. Sapura Energy is the new name for the company.
Mokhzani was a senior UMNO official in Kedah before retiring from politics. He is the second eldest son of Malaysia’s former Prime Minister, Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad.
Mokhzani is a businessman who was active in the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO), serving as treasurer of the Youth Wing at one point. Mokhzani was an UMNO delegate from one of Kedah’s constituencies in 2006.
Marina Mahathir – Marina Mahathir is a Malaysian writer and sociopolitical activist. She is the eldest child of Malaysia’s fourth and seventh Prime Ministers, Tun Mahathir Mohamad and Siti Hasmah Mohamad Ali. She received her bachelor’s degree from the University of Sussex.
Marina is an active socio-political blogger and a leader in many non-governmental organizations, including the Malaysian AIDS Foundation. Since 1989, she has also written a bi-weekly column called Musings in The Star newspaper.
Marina married Tara Sosrowardoyo, a well-known Indonesian photographer, on June 7, 1998. They have three children: two daughters and a son.
She was previously married to Didier Roussille, a Frenchman. Ineza Roussille is Marina and Didier’s daughter.
Melinda Mahathir – There is not much information about Melinda Mahathir.
Mazhar Mahathir – Mazhar Mahathir is one of the adopted children of Mahathir Mohamad. Our checks reveal that he was adopted in 1983.
Maizura Mahathi – There is not much information about Maizura Mahathi.
