Ace broadcaster cum investigative journalist, Afia Pokuaa who is widely known as Vim Lady has commented on the release of funds by the government to pay striking teachers.

The outspoken media personality made these comments with the bold statement;

“You can’t fight workers on any day especially election year.”

It can be recalled that on Thursday, December 5, three teacher unions, the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) and the Coalition of Concerned Teachers (CCT) declared a nationwide strike effective Monday, December 9 over arrears owed some of the unions’ members covering a period of between 2012 and 2016.

However, the government through the National Labour Commission labelled their strike as illegal ordering them to get back to work but the teachers who were bent on taking their monies, however, defied it.

The chairman of the Ghana Education Council, Michael Mahwah, seemed to have incurred much of the wrath of teachers when he said new teachers would be employed if the striking teachers did not return to the classroom.

However, the government changed its posture towards the teachers with the release of about 49 million Cedis to pay the owed teachers.
