A Nigerian professor identified as Edwin Okey Chikata Ijeoma has been expelled from South Africa.

This Nigerian professor once renounced his Nigerian citizenship, and per what we gathered, he was expelled from South Africa over bigamous marriage.

He is a professor of public sector economics at the University of Fort Hare (UFH) in the Eastern Cape and his citizenship was revoked by the Ministry of Home Affairs after he fraudulently relied on a bigamous marriage to a South African woman to obtain naturalisation and citizenship.

Reports revealed that the professor made his way to South Africa from Nigeria after gaining a study permit in 1998.

He went South Africa to pursue his academic studies at the University of Pretoria and obtained a PhD in economics in 2003.

The report according to the DispatchLIVE stated that the professor took home affairs on review to the Bhisho High Court, but in a 2020 judgment, the court held the minister had not erred in finding Ijeoma had made false representations about his marital status to the department or in determining his SA citizenship was null and void.

The acting judge, Mickey Mfenyana has also denied Ijeoma leave to appeal the ruling indicating that another court will not differ from her finding that he was disingenuous, if not dishonest and that there was no reason to interfere with the minister’s decision.

This action that was taken by the home affair has really made him an undesirable inhabitant of South Africa as this implies that since he has denounced his Nigerian citizenship, he now has nowhere to go.
