Some Nigerians have reacted and have condemned the shooting of Human Rights Activist and former presidential candidate, Mr. Omoyele Sowore during a protest against insecurity in Abuja by the Police Officer, ACP Atine.

The incident occurred when there was a shooting at the Unity Fountain Ground where a rally was supposed to take place. The shooting took place due to the fight of insecurity and police brutality in the country. There have been series of reports from Nigeria that some unknown gunmen have taken over some part of the country gunning down innocent people and important personalities.

Reports from the footage from a live video of the incident at the grounds showed the Human Rights activists and his team chanting solidarity songs before the shooting began. In the video, it would be seen that some officers were arriving at the scene, with a small crowd led by Sowore standing at the entrance of the Unity Fountain when shots were heard and he fell on the ground.

Confirming the shooting, the lawyer of Sowore said…

“Yes, Omoyele Sowore was shot. Though he didn’t die, he sustained an injury. He was at the Unity Fountain to mobilize Nigerians ahead of a grand protest against insecurity on June 12. “While he and other members of the #RevolutionNow movement were still speaking to the policemen who denied them access to the venue, another combined team of security operatives arrived the venue and shot at him,” Effiong said. He called it a “tragic day in Nigeria’s civic society space” and asked Nigerians to pray for the activist.

Sowore has however been rushed to the hospital for immediate treatment.
