Last week, social media was buzzing like never before after Ghgossip.com did a story on Ghanaian nurses/midwives and statistics which back their ‘legendary’ insolence.

The story detailed a report conducted by the World Health Organisation and published in the Lancet Medical Journal which stated that more than one-third of women in four low-income countries in Africa and Asia were slapped, mocked, forcibly treated or otherwise abused during childbirth in health centers.

The study was carried out in Ghana, Guinea Myanmar and Nigeria and it correctly painted the right picture that our sisters and mothers go through at the hands of these savages (not all nurses though and take note, my sister was a victim of this).

The study, which was carried out on 2,016 women, found that 42 per cent of the women experienced physical or verbal abuse or some form of stigma or discrimination at maternity health facilities.

No sooner had we shared the story on our various social media handles than Ghanaians jumped on it and stated raining insults at nurses and ultimately corroborating the story.

But some nurses and midwives also came out in their numbers to defend themselves on the thread and it was one hell of a back and forth banter.

Eventually, we saw one of the comments from a midwife whose experience with pregnant women caught our attention.

According to her, patients and expectant mothers are the cause of their woes hence no one should one blame nurses for acting like the ‘humans’ that they are.

She also revealed how she paid for a young lady who gave birth at Peki Hospital to be discharged because she has no money.
