The former president of South Africa who was also the last white person to rule the country has reportedly passed on at age 85.
According to one of the spokespeople from his Foundation who gave information about his death, FW de Klerk was diagnosed with cancer. FW de Klerk died on Thursday morning at his residence in Cape Town.

Former President FW de Klerk died peacefully at his home in Fresnaye earlier this morning following his struggle against mesothelioma cancer” the statement said.
He was diagnosed in March with Mesothelioma, cancer that affects the tissue lining the lungs. He is survived by his wife Elita, his children Jan and Susan, and his grandchildren” the FW de Klerk Foundation said adding that the necessary arrangement will be announced regarding the funeral soon.
FW de Klerk had taken over from PW Botha as the head of the National Party in February 1989 and the following year announced he was removing the ban on parties that included Mr. Mandela’s African National Congress (ANC).
