In a report made by GraphicOnline.com, a speeding train had no option than to ram into a fuel tanker at a level crossing in Takoradi.

Per the report, it took the timely intervention of personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) to prevent a potential calamity.

The fuel tanker was reportedly carrying about 45,000 litres of diesel and was moving the diesel from Sekondi to other supply points in parts of the Sekondi-Takoradi metropolis when it developed a mechanical fault just at the level crossing.

It was revealed that during that period, the automatic signalling system at the level crossing was not working and also no signalman was around.

Per what eyewitnesses said, as the driver and his mate saw the train approaching, they had to abandon the truck and run for their lives.

The Western Regional Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the GNFS, Mr Emmanuel Bonney, indicated to Daily Graphic that firemen were called in immediately the crash happened stating that upon reaching the scene, they sprayed the diesel tanker with foam powder to avoid an explosion.

In his submission, he said;

“The truck driver said he heard the train tooting its horn within moments of the vehicle developing the fault. It was, however, too late for them to repair the defective truck and move it off the path of the speeding train.”
