Swansea City of the Championship hired Cooper as their head coach on June 13, 2019, for a three-year term.

With two league games remaining in the regular season, they drew 2-2 with Reading on April 25, 2021, to lock up their playoff spot.
Cooper was in charge of his 100th game. Swansea came in fourth place in the league but fell to Brentford in the play-off final. In July 2021, he left the club with everyone’s approval.
On September 21, 2021, Cooper signed a two-year contract to become Nottingham Forest’s head coach in the Championship. Nottingham Forest was currently in last place in the division at this time.
Cooper influenced Forest to be more assured with the ball and launch more assaults, which improved their style of play.
He also helped the players’ mindset by encouraging a stronger sense of community and a “big club mentality.” Following a 1-0 victory over Huddersfield Town in the Championship Play-Off Final at Wembley Stadium on May 29, 2022, Cooper guided Nottingham Forest to promotion to the Premier League.
He extended his contract with the team until 2025 on October 7, 2022. Club owner Evangelos Marinakis said on April 5, 2023, that he still had faith in Cooper but added that results and performances must “improve immediately” following a run of disappointing results and reports that Cooper was at risk of being fired.
