A South African taxi driver named Nhlonipho Zulu has been rewarded with R40 000 ( $2,786) after helping a pregnant woman deliver her baby inside his vehicle.

The reward came from the SA National Taxi Council and other donation from members of the public. The SA National Taxi Council also gave him a certificate.

The mother of the newborn baby boy, Ntombenhle Mthembu, also received R5 000 ($348), a gift pack and 500 disposable nappies, while the owner of the taxi, Nokuthula Mhlongo, received R3 000 ($209).

The baby was born on January 8 when Mthembu, who was eight months pregnant, alerted Zulu to the fact that she was going into labour in his taxi.

He dropped off two passengers and rushed to a nerby Clinic. But she was turned away, leaving Zulu with no other option but to become her midwife.
