The former head of state and Army General, Yakubu Gowon caused a stir in Nigeria when he attended his wedding in a classic Mercedes Benz in 1969 and left the church premises in an open-topped Rolls Royce.

“Jack” as he was preferably called by his peers was 31 years when he became the head of state in Nigeria through a counter-coup d’état. He ruled the country from 1966 to 1975 when he was kicked out of office in another coup.
He shocked Nigerians when he tied the knot with his longtime lover during the civil war. Apparently, the plight of the people was of no importance to him when he married his wife, Victoria Zakari on 19th April 1969 in Lagos.

The wedding took place at Christ Church Cathedral where General Gowon arrived at the church in a Mercedes Benz limousine and left in an open-top Rolls Royce alongside a convoy.
