20-year-old Samuel Takyi secured the Bronze medal for Ghana in the Men’s Featherweight Divison boxing championship at the just ended Tokyo Olympics Games becoming the only Ghanaian to win a medal for the country.

Samuel Takyi tasted his first defeat at the global games after losing to United States boxer Duke Regan in a 4-1 decision by the five-member referee panel in the semi-final match failing to secure his place in the finals of the Men’s Featherweight division boxing championship.

In an attempt to show the country’s support and appreciation to the young and talented boxer and the whole Ghana Boxing Federation, the President has gifted him 30,000 United States Dollars and a brand new car.

This was when the Ghana Boxing Federation together with the Minister for Youth and Sports, Hon. Mustapha Ussif paid a courtesy call on the President at the Jubilee House today.

Samuel’s Bronze medal was the first medal for the country in 29 years after the Men’s Football team also won a Bronze in the football competition in the 1992 Barcelona Olympics Games. He joins boxing legends like Clement Quartey who won a medal for Ghana in the Rome 1960 Olympic Games, and Eddie Blay who also did it at the very same ground in Tokyo 1964 Olympic Games.
