According to reports from the devastated fishmongers, the fire devoured a wooden shed containing several barrels of premixed gasoline and fishing equipment.
Also, one of the injured whose injuries looked very severe was immediately rushed to the hospital for medical attention.
The fire started when premix fuel being moved into a canoe by several fishermen came into touch with flames in a coal pot, according to Mena Ekua, a fishmonger who observed the incident.
She said that many on the site instantly dove into the Benya Lagoon, preventing a large number of deaths.
DOIII Abdul Wasiu Hudu, the Regional Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Ghana National Fire Service, confirmed the tragedy to the GNA in Cape Coast, saying his office received a call at 1207 hours on the event.
DOIII Hudu stated that the Elmina Fire Station dispatched a crew to the area and that reinforcements from the University of Cape Coast (UCC) station were afterward dispatched.
He stated the fire burned a boat, a power generator, and other home equipment, as well as large tons of fish.
According to the PRO, several firemen were stationed at the adjoining Elmina Market Branch of the Kakum Rural Bank to safeguard it owing to the ferocity of the fire.
“Unfortunately, part of the roof of the bank is burnt and the heat from the fire has affected the walls of the bank,” he said.
The victim, who suffered just minor injuries, informed the team that they were putting premix gasoline into their boat when it took fire and engulfed the area within seconds, according to DOIII Hudu.
However, the Ghana National Fire Service will be commencing its investigation on the matter to uncover the actual cause of the tragedy.
According to DOIII Hudu, there have been a number of discussions with fishing villages, particularly in Elmina, concerning the storage and safety of premix fuel.
He further urged the fishmongers as well as the general public to adhere to the safety measures and protocols at the various homes and workplaces.
