George Michael and Prince are set to be honoured during this year’s edition of the Grammy Award. Both artistes died in 2016; Prince died on April 21 whilst George passed away on Christmas Day.
The 59th annual Grammy awards will feature performances from Beyonce, Alicia Keys, Lady Gaga, Bruno Mars and Metallica, Chance The Rapper and Adele
Neil Portnow, the president and CEO of the Recording Academy said of the two legends, “They were pop icons who showcased rare musical genius and otherworldly charisma. While each possessed a distinct style and sound, they were both adored by audiences worldwide. The passings of the two such such creative innovators were huge loss for the creative community; The Recording Academy is humbled to pay homage to their tremendous legacies on the GRAMMY stage.
It is not clear which musician will be paying tribute to the music icons though names like John Legend and Cynthia Erivo have popped up.
George Michael wowed the world with his songs and is best remembered for Careless whisper which became a huge success worldwide. Prince Rogers Nelson was an America singer-songwriter who has sold over 100 million records worldwide and was a multiple recipient of the Grammys.
The Grammy Awards will take place on Sunday February 12 2017 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. It will be broadcast live at 8p.m.
