The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom has decided to resign after only 44 days in office. Speaking outside Downing Street, she stated that she was unable to fulfill the mandate for which she was elected.
It kicks off a search for the next Tory leader and Prime Minister, with a decision expected by next Friday.
Jeremy Hunt, the newly appointed Chancellor, rules himself out. However, Rishi Sunak and Penny Mordaunt are considered contenders.
Sources close to former Prime Minister Boris Johnson will not confirm or deny whether he will run again.
Truss’ departure after only 44 days in office makes her the UK’s shortest-serving Prime Minister in history.
Her now-canceled September mini-budget sparked the uproar, and a tumultuous night in the Commons on Wednesday sealed her fate.
In her submission, she said;
“I recognize that given the situation I cannot deliver the mandate on which I was elected by the Conservative Party. I have therefore spoken to his majesty the king to notify him that I am resigning as leader of the Conservative Party.”
