Usman Alkali Baba is now the new Inspector General of Police of Nigeria. The outgoing Inspector General of Police (IGP) Mohammed Adamu handed over to him.

The handing over ceremony was held at the Force Headquarters, Abuja on Wednesday, April 7.

This comes after the Vice President Yemi Osinbajo honored the new IGP with his new rank in the state house, Abuja earlier today.

The tenure of office of Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu was increased in the month of February by 3 months. At that time, Mohammed Dingyadi, the Minister of Police Affairs disclosed the news on Thursday afternoon of February 4.

The reason for the extension was to allow room for a proper selection of a successor to take over from Adamu. The tenure of IGP ended on Monday, February 1. Meanwhile, the government ended IGP’s tenure because the selection process for a new Inspector General of Police had been completed.

Maigari Dingyadi, the Minister of Police Affairs made this disclosure while addressing State House Correspondents at the Presidential Villa Abuja. He named Usman Baba as the new Acting Inspector General of Police with immediate effect.

Here is what Dingyadi said when asked on why the President didn’t allow Adamu Mohammed to complete his 3-month extension tenure:

The president is aware of this and you cannot take away that responsibility from him; he’s the one who is in charge of appointing or extending tenures.

He has now decided to appoint a new person. So, please, allow him that responsibility and we cannot do anything about it.
