Onyeka Onwenu is a Nigerian singer. songwriter, actress, human rights activist, social activist, journalist, politician, and former X Factor series judge. She has also been nicknamed “Elegant Stallion” by the Nigerian press. She is a former chairperson of the Imo State Council for Arts and Culture.

Onyeka Onwenu was born on January 1, 1952, in Obosi in Nigeria. In 2013 she was appointed the Executive Director/Chief Executive Officer of the National Center for Women Development.

In 1984, Onwenu wrote and presented the internationally acclaimed BBC/NTA documentary Nigeria, A Squandering of Riches which became the definitive film about corruption in Nigeria as well as the intractable Niger Delta agitation for resource control and campaign against environmental degradation in the oil-rich region of Nigeria.

One of the achievements of Onyeka was in 1984 after she released a scathing documentary for BBC/NTA, titled “Nigeria: A Squandering of Riches” This documentary drew attention and reactions from the public and changed the views of Nigerians on corruption and environmental degradation.

Onyeka Onwenu is a member of the People’s Democratic Party. She has contested twice to become the Local Council Chairman of her local government and lost but was later appointed Chairperson of Imo State Council for Arts and Culture by former governor Ikedi Ohakim.

Onyeka is a high-principled person who was nicknamed “No nonsense woman”.
