Law enforcement sources have confirmed that Del Balso was the individual who was fatally shot near the Monster Gym in Dorval, situated between the service road of Highway 40 and St-Régis Blvd.
Recent events had seen multiple attempts on Francesco Del Balso’s life, and he was allegedly implicated in a plot to eliminate Leonardo Rizzuto, a reputed Mafia leader. Presently, no arrests have been made in connection with the shooting, and the investigation is ongoing.
In the aftermath of the incident, Del Balso’s lifeless body remained at the crime scene, covered by a red blanket near an outdoor table.
Antonio Nicaso, an expert on organized crime and a lecturer at Queen’s University, expressed little surprise regarding Del Balso’s demise. Nicaso highlighted the previous attempts on Del Balso’s life and his reported involvement in the mid-March assassination attempt on Rizzuto.
Nicaso, known for his extensive writings on the Mafia, described Francesco Del Balso as a senior member of the Rizzuto crime family during the leadership of Vito Rizzuto. However, after Rizzuto’s death, Del Balso became entangled in conflicts with the organization as he sought to expand his own influence and power.
When Del Balso was apprehended in 2006 as part of Project Colisée, he was relatively unknown. However, the evidence that emerged during the extensive police investigation into the Montreal Mafia and its leaders brought him notoriety. Del Balso displayed a brazen disregard for consequences, often engaging in conversations over recorded cellphones where he made threats.
One particularly unsettling threat made by Francesco Del Balso was played during the Charbonneau Commission, shedding light on the Montreal Mafia’s influence within the construction industry. The recorded conversation captured his attempt to collect unpaid bills from a tool rental company.
In 2008, Del Balso pleaded guilty to some charges related to Project Colisée, acknowledging his role as a leader within the Rizzuto organization. He received a lengthy prison sentence of 15 years, one of the harshest penalties handed down in connection with the investigation. Upon his release years later, the organized crime landscape in Montreal had undergone significant transformations.
The Rizzuto organization faced numerous challenges to its dominance within the Montreal Mafia. In 2016, Lorenzo Giordano, who closely collaborated with Del Balso during the Colisée investigation, was killed in Laval, near a fitness gym. Testimony from an informant during murder trials indicated that Giordano’s assassination was ordered by the Scoppa brothers, Salvatore and Andrea, as part of a conflict between Sicilian and Calabrian factions within the Montreal Mafia.
Following Giordano’s murder, Del Balso lived in a constant state of danger. In May 2017, an individual named Marc Laflamme Berthelot forcibly entered Del Balso’s residence in Laval, threatening his family while searching for him.
Thankfully, a relative managed to warn Del Balso, who subsequently removed a GPS tracking device that he was obligated to wear on his ankle as part of parole conditions. His action stemmed from the belief that those intending to harm him had somehow exploited the GPS locator.
He was shot dead on Monday, June 5, 2023.
