Before switching to BBC One’s Nine O’Clock News and starting to host regularly in 1975, Rippon presented radio and television news programs in South West England.
She was the third female news presenter to appear on national broadcasts on British television, following Barbara Mandell on Independent Television News (ITN) in 1955 and Nan Winton, who temporarily presented the national news on BBC Television in 1960. She was also the first female journalist to be given a permanent role presenting the national television news for the BBC.
In addition to presenting Come Dancing and the first two seasons of Top Gear, Rippon made an appearance on the Morecambe and Wise Christmas Show in 1976. In 1977, she served as host of the Eurovision Song Contest.
She co-founded TV-am, a breakfast television brand, and served as one of its presenters. She transitioned to radio in the 1990s, hosting daily news programs for LBC Newstalk from 1990 to 1994. She also made guest appearances as a stand-in announcer on Channel 4’s The Big Breakfast.
