He entered the ATP Tour as a wildcard at the Atlanta Open, where he won his first match against Ramkumar Ramanathan. In his subsequent encounter, he was defeated in three sets by No. 2 seed John Isner. The Cincinnati Masters granted Shelton a wildcard berth.

He was the Top 250’s youngest American as well.
Shelton made his Australian Open debut in 2023 and advanced to the fourth round with victories over Alexei Popyrin, Nicolás Jarry, and Zhang Zhizhen. After the 2022 US Open, this was only Shelton’s second Grand Slam.
He then overcame fellow countryman J. J. Wolf to advance to a Major quarterfinal for the first time in his career. He climbed over 50 spots into the top 50 as a result.
