Shelton made his Australian Open debut in 2023 and advanced to the fourth round with victories over Alexei Popyrin, Nicolás Jarry, and Zhang Zhizhen. After the 2022 US Open, this was only Shelton’s second Grand Slam.

He then overcame fellow countryman J. J. Wolf to advance to a Major quarterfinal for the first time in his career. He climbed over 50 spots into the top 50 as a result.
