Woodward was born to Jane Upshur and Alfred E. Woodward. His parents divorced when he was twelve, and he and his brother and sister were raised by their father, who subsequently remarried.

He attended Wheaton Community High School (WCHS), a public high school in the same city, where he was raised and received his education.

Woodward attended Yale College with a Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps (NROTC) scholarship after graduating from WCHS in 1961, where he studied history and English literature. Woodward joined the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity and belonged to Book and Snake while attending Yale.

In 1965, he obtained his B.A. Woodward started his five-year term of duty in the US Navy after graduating from Yale.

Woodward served in the Navy and was one of two officers tasked with handling the nuclear launch codes that the USS Wright carried while acting as a National Emergency Command Post Afloat (NECPA).

Being the communications officer on the USS Fox under Welander’s command at one point brought him close to the admiral.

Bob Woodward career

Woodward was accepted to Harvard Law School after being released from service as a lieutenant in August 1970, but he decided not to enroll. Instead, he applied for a position as a reporter for The Washington Post and enrolled in graduate programs at George Washington University in Shakespeare and international politics.

He was given a two-week trial by Harry M. Rosenfeld, the metropolitan editor of the Post, but was rejected due of his lack of journalism background. Woodward was hired as a Post reporter in 1971 after working for a year at the Montgomery Sentinel, a weekly newspaper in the suburbs of Washington, D.C.

Both Woodward and Carl Bernstein were tasked with covering the invasion of the Democratic National Committee’s headquarters on June 17, 1972, which took place in the Watergate office complex in Washington, D.C.

They gained notoriety for being the first to report on a variety of political “dirty tactics” employed by the Nixon re-election committee during his re-election campaign thanks to editor Ben Bradlee’s efforts.

The book and movie also contributed to the ongoing enigma surrounding the identity of Woodward’s covert Watergate informant known only as Deep Throat—a play on the name of a then-currently-famous pornographic film.

Before Deep Throat passed away or consented to having his name published, Woodward vowed to keep his identity a secret. Only Woodward, Bernstein, and a small group of others were aware of the informant’s identity for more than 30 years until his family revealed to Vanity Fair magazine in May 2005 that he was the former Federal Bureau of Investigation Associate Director W. Mark Felt.

Former President George W. Bush was the subject of six separate, nearly 11-hour interviews by Woodward, who gave him more time than any other journalist.

Bush at War (2002), Plan of Attack (2004), State of Denial (2006), and The War Within: A Secret White House History (2006–2008) (2008) are four books by Woodward that provide in-depth analyses of the Bush administration, including the response to the September 11 attacks and the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.

A fourth book in Woodward’s Bush at War series was in the works, he said in 2008 during an interview with Google CEO Eric Schmidt for the Talks at Google series. Then, in jest, he added that his wife had threatened to murder him if he decided to write the fifth book in the series.

Woodward still writes books and reports stories for The Washington Post even though he is no longer employed by the newspaper. He holds the honorific position of associate editor at the publication, which Post media writer Margaret Sullivan defined as an accolade with no regular duties.

He concentrates on the White House, intelligence, and institutions in Washington like the Federal Reserve, the Pentagon, and the U.S. Supreme Court.

He also published the book Wired, which explores the drug culture in Hollywood and the passing of comedian John Belushi. Woodward revealed in 2018 that she would be taking an online course on investigative reporting.
