On Thursday 20th January, a massive explosion was reported to have occurred at Appiatse at Bogoso in the Western Region which claimed the lives of dozens of residents in the area and also caused various degrees of injuries.

The explosion was said to have occurred after a truck carrying explosives to the mining in the community collided with a motorcycle, leading to an explosion that claimed the lives of many estimated to be about 100 people.

The Western Regional Manager of the Minerals Commission, Mr. Isaac Mwebilim told UTV news that the Maxam Company Limited believed to be the manufacturers of the explosives has been shut down by the commission.

According to him, the commission has commenced an investigation to ensure that the community and residents are safe from further tragedies before the company can commence operations again.

“We have not completed investigations, and we cannot say that Maxam has gone wrong in any of this. We are still going through investigations. Remember that the Police are also doing their investigations on the spot”, he said.

“Till we put all these pieces together and look at the requirements, then we will be able to tell who is culpable and who is not. But at this stage, we cannot tell who is culpable or not. We are still in the process of investigations. Until investigations are completed, we cannot say someone is culpable or not“, he added.
