Borje Salming Cause of Death, Age, Illness, Wife, Children: – Borje Salming, officially known as Anders Börje Salming was an ice hockey defenceman who played 23 seasons with Brynas IF, the Toronto Maple Leafs, the Detroit Red Wings, and AIK.

Anders Börje Salming, nicknamed The King was born on April 17, 1951, in Kiruna. He played 16 seasons with Toronto Maple Leafs from 1973 to 1989 and was placed into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1996.

Borje Salming Cause of Death

Börje Salming died on Thursday, November 24, 2022, after battling with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). He died at the age of 71.

In a statement released on Thursday announcing the death, his team wrote; “pioneer of the game and an icon with an unbreakable spirit and unquestioned toughness. He helped open the door for Europeans in the NHL and defined himself through his play on the ice and through his contributions to the community. Börje joined the Maple Leafs 50 years ago and will forever be part of our hockey family. We extend our deepest condolences to his wife, Pia, his children Theresa, Anders, Rasmus, Bianca, Lisa, Sara, and brother Stieg.”

Borje Salming Illness

Borje Salming announced in August that he had been diagnosed with ALS. He said, “I have received news that has shaken my family and me. The signs that indicated that something was wrong in my body turned out to be the disease ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. In an instant, everything changed. I do not know how the days ahead will be, but I understand that there will be challenges greater than anything I have ever faced.”

ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) is a progressive nervous system disease that causes paralysis, inability to swallow, respiratory failure, and then death.
