Daboll’s first coaching position was at the College of William & Mary in 1997. He was hired as a restricted earnings coach. In 1998, he transferred to Michigan State University, where he served as a graduate assistant to head coach Nick Saban until 1999.
Daboll began his NFL coaching career as a defensive coaching assistant for the New England Patriots in 2000, under Bill Belichick, the team’s new coach. In 2002, he was elevated to the Patriots’ wide receiver coach position. The Patriots won three Super Bowls during Daboll’s tenure with the franchise. Following the 2006 season, he departed the Patriots to work for the New York Jets.

However, the Chiefs concluded the season with a league-worst record of 2-14, Crennel was fired after one season. Daboll was not retained by the new head coach, Andy Reid.
