Brock Purdy Career

Purdy became Mr. Irrelevant in 2022 when the San Francisco 49ers selected him with the last choice (262nd overall) in the NFL Draft.

For the 2022 season, Trey Lance was selected as the starting quarterback over Jimmy Garoppolo, making Purdy the backup. However, Lance only played in two games before suffering a season-ending ankle injury in Week 2 against the Seattle Seahawks.

On the 49ers’ final drive against the Kansas City Chiefs in the fourth quarter on October 23, 2022, Purdy replaced Garoppolo. He threw for 66 yards and an interception as the 49ers lost 23-44.

When Garoppolo sustained a foot injury on December 4 during the first quarter of the 49ers’ Week 13 game against the Miami Dolphins, the 49ers once more turned to Purdy.

In a 33-17 victory, Purdy played skillfully, completing 25 of 37 passes for 210 yards, two touchdown passes, one to fullback Kyle Juszczyk one to running back Christian McCaffrey, and one interception.

In a regular-season game, Purdy became the first “Mr. Irrelevant” to throw a touchdown pass. Purdy was selected as the 49ers’ starting quarterback for the remainder of the 2022 campaign after Garoppolo suffered an injury.

When the 49ers defeated the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 35-7 on December 11, Purdy became the only quarterback in his first start of his career to defeat a team headed by Tom Brady.

In addition to a 2-yard rushing touchdown, Purdy finished the game with 185 throwing yards and two touchdowns. Following the game, the 49ers referred to Purdy as “Mr. Relevant” in a tweet.

Purdy and the 49ers defeated the Seattle Seahawks in the ensuing contest, winning 21-13 and capturing the NFC West title.

He completed 17 of his 26 passes for 217 yards and two touchdowns, both to George Kittle, to help his team win. After Aaron Rodgers, Purdy became the second player in NFL history to achieve a cumulative quarterback rating of 115 or higher in just his first two starts.

The 49ers won 37-20 in Week 16 against the Washington Commanders thanks in part to Purdy, who ended with 234 passing yards, two touchdowns, and an interception.

Purdy led the 49ers to a 37-34 victory in overtime in their Week 17 game against the Las Vegas Raiders. With 284 throwing yards, two passing touchdowns, and one interception, he had a winning performance.

Purdy was selected by the NFL as the NFC’s Rookie of the Month for December and January 2023 on January 12th. Purdy, instead of Sam Darnold and Trey Lance, who was later traded, was selected as the starting quarterback for the opening game of the 2023 season due to his good injury rehabilitation.

Purdy completed 19 of his 29 passes for 220 yards, two touchdowns (both to Brandon Aiyuk), and a passer rating of 111.3 in Week 1’s game against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Purdy became the first quarterback in NFL history to win his first six career regular-season starts and throw at least two touchdown passes in each of those games with the 49ers victory and two touchdown touchdowns on the day.

With a passer rating of 111.3, Purdy also made NFL history by becoming the first quarterback to start each of his first six regular-season games with a passer rating of 95.0 or above.

Purdy set a new 49er franchise record for the highest single-game completion rate of 95.2% during Week 4’s game against the Arizona Cardinals by completing 20 of 21 throws.

Steve Young had previously set the 49ers’ 90% mark during Week 8 of the 1991 campaign. Purdy completed 17 of 24 pass attempts for 252 yards and four touchdowns in Week 5’s matchup with the Dallas Cowboys.

With this triumph, Purdy joined Kurt Warner, Peyton Manning, and Tom Brady as the only quarterbacks in NFL history to have led a team to at least eight straight regular-season victories in which they scored 30 points or more.
