Paul was born to Charles Edward Paul and Robin Jones. He shares the same parents with his elder brother, Charles “C.J” Paul and they both grew up in Lewisville.

Because he, his father, and his brother all had the same initials, his family gave him the moniker “CP3”. Charles Sr., a former athlete himself, mentored and coached his boys in basketball and football throughout their youths.

The Paul brothers worked at their grandfather Nathanial Jones’ service station during their formative years; Paul considers his grandfather to be his “best buddy” and credits him with teaching him many valuable lessons.

Paul went to Clemmons, North Carolina’s West Forsyth High School. He participated in junior varsity sports during his freshmen and sophomore years. In his junior season, he led West Forsyth to the state playoffs with an average of 25 points, 5.3 assists, and 4.4 steals per game.

He guided Winston-Salem-based Kappa Magic to the National U-17 AAU championship the following summer, winning tournament MVP honors in the process.
