Chris Uhlmann Biography

Born on 1960 June 24, Christopher Gerald Uhlmann is an Australian journalist and TV host who before working as a radio producer for the Australian Broadcasting Corporation in 1998, held positions as a seminarian, security guard, and journalist for The Canberra Times.

Uhlmann and David Kilby co-hosted ABC Radio Canberra’s Local Radio Breakfast from 1999 to 2004. He produced Jon Faine’s Mornings show on ABC Radio Melbourne in 2005. In 2006, he was appointed chief political correspondent for ABC Radio’s current affairs program.

Uhlmann made the move to television in 2008, working as the political editor for ABC News, The 7.30 Report, and the ABC News channel. He was named co-host of ABC Television’s 7.30 current events program in December 2010. 2012 saw yet another redesign of the program, with Leigh Sales serving as host and Uhlmann taking up the position of political editor once more.

Uhlmann left his position as political editor of 7.30 in 2013. He declared that he will be contributing to an ABC documentary regarding the Gillard and Rudd administrations.

In February 2014, Uhlmann started hosting AM, the news and current affairs show on ABC Radio, as its fourteenth presenter. After Tony Eastley left to become a senior presenter for the ABC News channel, he assumed the post.

Uhlmann was assigned to the newly-created role of political editor at ABC News in January 2015. Uhlmann resigned from his job as AM’s presenter due to the new role, and Michael Brissenden took over.

Following the viral success of his two-minute ABC Insiders report on Donald Trump’s attendance at the 2017 G20 Hamburg conference in July 2017, Uhlmann was widely interviewed in the US on several television networks.

Uhlmann made his announcement in August 2017 that he was quitting the ABC to take Laurie Oakes’ place as political editor at Nine News.

During the August 2018 Liberal Party leadership spill, Uhlmann became well-known on social media once more after appearing on Today and declaring that News Corp, the 2GB radio station, and the television network Sky News were “waging a war” against Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull.

He claimed he “couldn’t give a rat’s ass” and added, “If you dish it out, you have to be prepared to take it,” in response to a question about how he thought presenters on Sky or 2GB would react. After Uhlmann retired in October 2022, Charles Croucher was named Nine News’ political editor. Chris Uhlmann joined Sky News in April 2024.

Gai Brodtmann, an Australian Labor Party member serving in the House of Representatives for the Division of Canberra from 2010 to 2019, is Chris Uhlmann’s spouse. Brodtmann also holds a council position at the Australian Strategic Policy Institute.
